Veja wurde 2005 von Sébastien Kopp und François-Ghislain Morillion, mit dem Ziel nachhaltig produzierte und stylische Sneaker auf den Markt zu bringen, in Frankreich gegründet. Dabei setzen die beiden Gründer auf einen Materialmix aus Bio-Baumwolle, nachhaltig gegerbtem Leder, Naturkautschuk und recycelten PET-Flaschen. Alle Rohstoffe werden unter fairen Bedingungen und von der FLO zertifiziert in Brasilien angebaut und dort auch zu den Sneakern weiter verarbeitet. So wird die Bio-Baumwolle z.B. als Nebenprodukt von lokalen Bauern hergestellt, die damit ihren Lebensunterhalt verbessern können. Das Leder wird mit rein pflanzlichen Stoffen (u.a. Akazienextrakte) gegerbt. Der Naturkautschuk wird aus wild wachsenden Bäumen gewonnen und setzt ein wichtiges Zeichen gegen die räuberische Ausbeutung der Urwälder in Brasilien. Ergänzend wurde in den letzten Kollektionen ein Meshmaterial eingeführt, dass aus in Brasilien recycelten PET-Flaschen besteht. Zwar ist Plastik mit dem Rohstoff Erdöl immernoch eine nicht besonders nachhaltige Ressource, jedoch werden mit dem Material bereits verwendete Rohstoffe recycelt anstatt verbrannt. Alles in allem ist Veja einer der wichtigsten Vorreiter für nachhaltige Schuhe, die auch vom Design mit großen Marken wie adidas und nike messen können.

Veja was founded in France in 2005 by Sébastien Kopp and François-Ghislain Morillion with the aim of bringing sustainably produced and stylish sneakers to the market. The two founders rely on a material mix of organic cotton, sustainably tanned leather, natural rubber and recycled PET bottles. All raw materials are grown under fair conditions and certified by FLO in Brazil, where they are also processed into the sneakers. The organic cotton, for example, is produced as a by-product by local farmers, who can thus improve their livelihood. The leather is tanned with purely vegetable substances (including acacia extracts). The natural rubber is extracted from trees growing in the wild and sends an important signal against the predatory exploitation of virgin forests in Brazil. In addition, a mesh material made from PET bottles recycled in Brazil has been introduced in recent collections. Although plastic with the raw material petroleum is still not a particularly sustainable resource, but with the material already used raw materials are recycled instead of burned. All in all, Veja is one of the most important pioneers in sustainable footwear, which can also compete with big brands like adidas and Nike in terms of design.
